What Stink Bugs Are & How They Behave

The brown marmorated stink bug is a shield-shaped, mottled brownish-gray insect about an inch long, named for the odor it releases when disturbed or crushed. First documented in Tennessee in the mid-2000s, it’s now established statewide, including right here in Coffee County.

These insects follow a predictable seasonal pattern. Adults emerge in spring to feed and reproduce outdoors through summer. As temperatures drop in fall, they gather on sun-warmed exterior walls before pressing through cracks, gaps around windows and doors, and unscreened vents. Once inside, they settle into wall voids, attics, and crawlspaces for the winter. Warm spells in late winter can bring them back out before spring, which is when many homeowners notice them suddenly appearing indoors.

Are Stink Bugs Dangerous?

Stink bugs don’t bite or sting people or pets, and they don’t reproduce indoors during dormancy, so a winter’s worth of bugs won’t multiply into more. The real problems are the odor released when bugs are disturbed and the yellow staining they can leave on furniture and surfaces. Large numbers gathering in and around a home make both issues significantly worse, which is why Manchester homeowners already call us about these nuisance pests each season.

Our Approach to Stink Bug Control in Manchester, TN

Stink bug control is primarily an exterior job. By the time bugs are visible indoors, they’ve already found a way in. Our integrated pest management approach targets harborage and entry areas on the outside of your home, treating siding, soffits, and the areas around windows and doors before the fall shelter-seeking period begins. Treatment timed ahead of the invasion is often more effective than reacting after bugs are already overwintering inside.

Our technicians are fully trained, licensed, and insured. We select products with your household in mind, prioritizing options that are kid- and pet-conscious so your family isn’t caught between pest pressure and product concerns.
