Signs of a Developing Mosquito Infestation
Are you dealing with a few stray mosquitoes or a full breeding population? It’s important to know the signs of a developing infestation so that you can catch it early, control it effectively, and prevent populations from becoming overwhelming.
Call Sherrill Pest Control if you notice:
- Increased outdoor activity at dawn and dusk. If you notice significantly more mosquitoes swarming during early morning or evening hours, which are prime mosquito feeding times, it indicates nearby breeding sites with emerging populations. You'll struggle to check your mailbox, walk your dog, or let children play outside during these hours without multiple bites occurring within minutes.
- Midday mosquito sightings. While mosquitoes are most active during cooler hours, seeing them actively flying and biting during the heat of the day signals very high population levels. This means breeding sites are producing so many mosquitoes that they're forced to compete for feeding opportunities at all hours, not just optimal times.
- Standing water that lingers after rain. Walk your property 2-3 days after rainfall and look for areas where water remains pooled, such as clogged gutters, low spots in the yard, items left outside (like tarps or toys), plant saucers, or areas where French drains aren't working properly. Murfreesboro's clay soil means water often sits rather than draining quickly, creating numerous breeding sites. If you notice water still present days after storms, mosquitoes are likely breeding there.
- Buzzing sounds near shaded areas. The high-pitched whining sound of multiple mosquitoes around shaded vegetation, under decks, or near your home's foundation indicates the presence of resting populations. Mosquitoes rest in these protected areas during the day, and large numbers gathered in one location suggest substantial breeding activity nearby.
- Multiple family members getting bitten indoors. When mosquitoes become a problem inside your home – not just one or two that have wandered in, but consistent indoor biting – it signals that outdoor populations have become so dense that they're actively seeking entry points. You'll notice mosquitoes on walls, ceilings, and around windows throughout the day and night.
Recognizing these warning signs early allows you to address mosquito problems before they reach the point where outdoor activities become impossible and your quality of life suffers.
Don't wait for mosquitoes to take over your property. Call Sherrill Pest Control at (931) 914-3185 to request a visit from our five-star-rated team!
